My special guest is Dr. Wendy Trudeau. She is an M.D. MBA. She is a functional medicine gynecologist. She received her MBA from Tufts University in 2000 and has been practicing functional medicine since 2009. After all these years, she is still passionate about helping women optimize their health and their lives. There are so many different challenges in a woman’s life work, home relationship, spirituality, health and the whole matter. While her credentials show that she’s a solid medical backdrop to help women achieve vitality, her own health journey has been inspired and supported her methods of care through her struggles with mold, metal toxicity, celiac disease and a variety of other health conditions. She has developed a deep sense of compassion for what her patients are facing when she is not helping her patients in her practice. Dr. Wendie Trubow: I’ll share with you. My mom has Addison’s disease, which is a complete failure of the adrenal glands, so she didn’t have any natural get up and go or cortisol, which means she also didn’t maintain her blood pressure. So her blood pressure when she was diagnosed was 16. It was 60 over 40. She couldn’t get out of bed, and when she did stand upright, she was dizzy and threw up and fainted, so she saw multiple doctors in every one of them. This was in the 80s and every one of them was male and every one of them said, Honey, you’re just depressed. You just finished your your divorce, you’re depressed. And she was pissed. She was like, I am depressed because I can’t get out of bed. But I wasn’t depressed before I can get out of bed and so on a microcosm. It’s really important that, you know, like, there’s genuinely something wrong. You know, it’s not just Oh, that age or, Oh, this is what my mom did. It’s not that there’s something going on. It’s fixable.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: And I mean, Addison’s, it’s really important to note that will kill you. And that means that you have 90 percent, at least of your adrenal glands gone before you get diagnosis. Very, very serious and scary. So that was stop you. That was a huge misstep. That’s really huge. That’s really a shame. Yeah. So that’s that’s important. And I I want to go back a little bit to the toxins that you’ve mentioned. Are there any of them that you feel like specifically target the gut? And if so, what do they do?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: Yeah, yes and no. Right. So yes, from the standpoint of that, it’s so interesting. Emory, I have celiac and I was a hot celiac mess before I got diagnosed and and it took a long time. I’m like the canary in the coal mine. If there’s a sniff of gluten in something I can tell you, I can tell you within a half hour because I get irritable, I get a headache, I have diarrhea and those ish and brain fog and those things used to last for, like six to 12 weeks. And when I started this detox process almost three years ago, I didn’t notice it at first because I don’t eat out that often, because with symptoms like that, why would you write what you want to get exposed? But I noticed after about six months on the Mycotoxins protocol that my gut was less reactive. So. The so here’s what’s interesting Mycotoxins are a mold are come from mold, and Candida is a type of mold, and so they’re related. So people who have issues with Candida often also have issues with mycotoxins and vice versa. And so there’s a lot of ebb and flow between them. And Ian, people who have Candida who have heavy metals, it’s really hard to get a handle on the Candida until you start dealing with the metals. So there’s a there’s a lot of little ways that these affect it. It’s not really clear exactly what’s the line between having these and how does it work. And so what I’ll hypothesize, hypothesize is it it creates a state of inflammation and a state of imbalance. And how the gut shows up with it is either constipation, irritability, diarrhea, bloating, poor digestion, reflux. GERD slowed, slowed emptying, poor absorption. It’ll it’s like a Typekit that’s like a toddler having a temper tantrum. You know, I’m not happy and I’m not doing my job. So it’s really about. Yes. And it’s not always a straight line to answer your question about what are the toxins and how. But but essentially when you’ve done everything right and you’re not responding, there’s a toxins issue.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: But so, you know that we have listeners out there, I guess this is me, this is totally me. I’ve been to this many different doctors. I haven’t looked at an ingredient in my life. I think that I have this and I really want to just have a few. Things that I can do to really start my journey, but I feel like so what are some tips that we can do to start the journey?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: This is great because because it goes back to you’re not going to transform overnight. So let’s just start leveling up. So food’s here and you do it all the time every day. So make better choices. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to make better choices all the time. So like we were talking about, instead of eating a carb for breakfast every morning, substituted out with something that essentially you want to eat food that looks like its natural state in life that you can recognize that doesn’t come from a package. So and and if possible, that is organic and locally sourced. Now I live in Massachusetts, we have 10 inches of snow today, and so there’s no local food in Massachusetts at this time of year. So we are by definition, importing or using hydroponically grown microgreens or great sauce that can be hydroponically grown. Those are great, but unless you have a microgreens sauce down the street from you, which we do, but most people don’t, it’s hard to get microgreens generally. So I would say start with food and the the most basic thing is try to avoid eating something from a package. Start with that. Now, if you have high levels of Candida, if you can have like a detox reaction when you start to do this, and in the first seven to 10 days, you can feel like a truck ran over you because you’re actually detoxing. It’s OK, OK, you’re not going to a fever, but you’re going to be like achy headaches, like a caffeine withdrawal that goes on way too long and it’ll pass. Just keep going. Okay? And then another thing I would say is get your greens in. You know, the cruciferous vegetables are fantastic for managing endocrine imbalances, so that can help support the gut and that helps detox from hormone issues. And then flax seed, parsley, cilantro, animal flesh. All of these things are helpful for improving phase two in the liver, things like turmeric and ginger. Those are also extremely helpful and their anti-inflammatory. So those are food based ways you can you can improve your health.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: That’s great, do you recommend sonnets?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: I do, and I actually got one a year ago, so. Yes. And the question I get a lot is, well, I can’t afford the the top of the line, you know, sunlight or other brand near amid far infrared. What should I do? And then my response is anything you can do is better than nothing. So there’s different levels. There are sauna blankets that are infrared. There are infrared mats that you can get. There are there’s like sauna pods there. Amazon has them. I call them sauna pods. Like, like a little thing. You sit up to your neck and you sit on a chair and everything of you is enclosed except your face. Those are great. They often are PVCs. You want to let them off gas for a little bit before you use them. And then there’s a higher end one that’s about $1200. One’s on Amazon are usually about 200 bucks. And then there’s a higher end one that’s about 1200 that also you can get that is a portable sauna pod type thing. So there’s lots of ways that you can do that. I love sauna. And if you’re going to sauna, it makes sense to also either do dry brushing or niacin or glutathione, something that’ll help your body start to do detox because you’re going in the sauna anyway. And then it’s really important to shower after your sauna because your skin has gotten rid of all these toxins are sitting on your skin. You want to wash them off so you don’t reabsorbed them.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: So many people struggle with bloating, bowel issues, brain fog, fatigue. You might not even have any gut issues, but did you know the cause of it could be food sensitivities or gut infections? What I have done is I have brought a talented functional nutritionist into my practice. We have very similar training in the nutritional world. And her name is Alexis Appleby. She is awesome. So you can head on over to our website ult. alti fam fam Med Medi- and have a consultation with her and schedule so that she can help you get to the root cause of your problems. And niacin is B3 right, and do people ever get concerned in your practice when they get a flush reaction? Because that has that has come in to my office. So maybe we should just cover that?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: Yes. So so you don’t want to go above 20 mg and you don’t want to start with two thousand milligrams, you want to start low and slow. So start low you if it’s not making you flush, it’s not working. So you want it to make you flush. And it’s so funny about a week ago, you know, I’m a really huge fan of life hacks, so I keep my flushing niacin right outside my sauna. So as I go into it, I can take two tabs, go to my sauna, and if I flush, I’m in the sauna, who cares? So even with the niacin right outside the sauna, I would say 25 percent the time I walk right by it, I don’t notice it. So about a week ago, I walked out of the sauna and was like, Oh, I forgot my niacin. So I took two tabs, went upstairs to shower, and I was in the middle of drying my hair. And all of a sudden I couldn’t drive my hair. I had to take my brush and brush my arms, and I’m like furiously brushing my arms. I’m like, Wait, I’m on my face. Wait, I’m all right. I’m having a flush. So, yeah, doctors are the worst patients, so. So yes, it should make you flush. If it doesn’t make you flush, it’s not working. And the flush can feel like the world’s worst hot flash because it goes on for like 10 15 minutes. It’s normal, it’s good. It’s just unpleasant. But yes, it should make you flush, OK?

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: And did we cover all the points of the tips?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: There’s always more. Absolutely. So, you know, something that’s not popular, although it’s January when we’re recording this and a lot of people are doing a dry January. So alcohol is really tough because it it makes the liver work more than it’s normally working. And let’s back up a step. Your liver’s doing the majority of work to detox you. So if you’re drinking alcohol, you’re diverting your liver off of its purpose of cleaning the body. So if you’re really serious about detoxing, I would either eliminate or limit alcohol because because it makes the body work harder. Same for sugar, because it throws the gut off. It throws off the adrenals. And I call it the Holy Trinity. It’s not not a religious reference at all. It’s the adrenals, the liver in the gut. Work together in this beautiful symmetry, and when one is off, it throws the other ones off. So if you’re eating a lot of sugar or drinking a lot of alcohol, that throws off the adrenals that send signals to the liver and makes the liver work harder, and then the gut comes along for the ride and gets thrown out of whack. So minimizing sugar, decreasing or eliminating alcohol are really easily accessible tips. And then I would say, if you’re doing any construction, make sure that it’s no VOC paint, no VOC varnishes. There are definitely brands that you can get that will not off gas the same way. And if you’re buying furniture, what’s really cool? Wayfair online just launched deep. It’s buried right? You have to go to filter and you scroll all the way to the bottom and there’s a shop sustainably option. And if you click it, you then have about 10 options for how you want to shop and you can get a strict as you want or as loose within that. But that will allow you to say, OK, no flame retardants in in my my furniture. So if you’re in the market for something, this is a good opportunity to level up. And then if you’re in the market for a mattress, I would say avocado or birch are my favorite two brands because they they really don’t put anything in it that that are bad for you.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: Right tips. Those are great. So how can the listeners really tune into their bodies to know if they are? Being chemically exposed.

Dr. Wendie Trubow: That’s great. OK, so if you’re living in this Earth and you’re not living under a rock, you’re being exposed. Let’s make it easy on people. You don’t have to worry about it, you’re being exposed. Typically, I say if you’re doing everything right, meaning you have a great diet and you get enough sleep and you’re not a super stress ball and you exercise regularly and you don’t feel like amazing, then it’s probably a chemical issue. And then what you want to look for is what are the low hanging fruit? Let’s make this easy. I stop pumping my own gas like, that’s easy. So it sort of depends. Like I say to people, do you live near a highway? Because if so, you’re getting exposed to the exhaust from cars and also the plastics as the tires drive on the highway, they degrade and these are these microparticles that are in the air. So if you live near a highway, you’re going to want to invest in high quality air filters for at least your bedroom and maybe other rooms, especially if you’re working from home or spend a lot of time at home now. If you live near a farm, you’re probably getting exposed to herbicides, pesticides and insecticides. So you’re going to want to test here and try not to be barefoot on your own yard because you’re going to absorb it that way. And so, sister, and if you are so funny, I have a patient who had high levels of glyphosate, and I said by any chance, do you have a landscaper who sprays Roundup? And it was a teenager and her mother and the mother said, Well, we don’t have a landscaper, but my husband loves his green lawn. And I said, Well, you’re going to have to ask your husband if he loves his daughter or his green lawn mower because she has really high levels of glyphosate, and she was a really sick kid. And they both laughed and they went, Oh, his green line’s going to win.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: Oh, wow.

Dr. Wendie Trubow: But don’t spray stuff on your yard. And if you do, make sure it’s organic. There’s a lot of companies developing now that you can have organic sprays that will inhibit the mosquitoes and the ticks, but not not kill the person to not kill the host at the same time. So a lot of ways it’s, I always say, work with the functional medicine provider because they’re going to be able to help you look at the data, you know, get the data, look at it and then start to peel off, OK? What’s a low hanging fruit? Is it food? Is it environmental? Is it something you’re putting on your body? What is that? Let’s pull it off.

Dr. Ann-Marie Barter: And is there any personal evaluation that maybe somebody can go through to potentially figure out how toxic they are and start their detoxification journey?

Dr. Wendie Trubow: Yes, yes. You can take the I think it’s called the multiple symptom questionnaire. MSC Q You can take that if you Google MSC Q online, you’ll find a million of them. I was about to say, Oh, go to our website, but we haven’t launched it yet. It’s coming in like three weeks, so I don’t want to promise that. But they can go online, look up MSC Q and you can take it and it’ll give you sort of this overall sense of how toxic are you? But it’s so there’s a lot of stuff you can do on your own. You know, you can absolutely level up on all the things around you and the food and the lifestyle. Typically, if you’re going to want the more focused evaluation, then I say, OK, work with the provider because it’s really you can’t get the tests on your own. And then it’s it can be tricky to understand how to how to interpret them. And then what’s the most meaningful behavior? Because the Great Wall of China was not built in a day, you probably aren’t going to deal with every toxin. At the same time, you’re going to want to pick one. Deal with it. Move on to the next one. Deal with that. Move on to the next one. Go systematically into it because otherwise it can be a really overwhelming.
